May 5th - Petersburg and the Historic "Eigil B"

This is the "Eigil B" when it was first commission in 1953. It is named after the Norwegian founder of Petersburg.

We met Captain Chuck Baker while walking around in Petersburg. He is on his way to Bristol Bay AK from Seattle WA on his historic Tender the "Eigil B" built in 1953. This type of tender transports fish from the fish boats to the fish companies and brokers that will purchase and process huge quantities of in this case salmon. Earlier in the year the tender was in Skagway for the Herring run. National Geographic is doing a documentary on Herring fishing and received permission from Chuck to be aboard the Eigil B during the last season. It will air on the National Geographic Channel sometime in December of 2008.

This is the Eigil B today.

We enjoy the view from the bridge.

The engine room is meticulously kept and has two huge Cummings Engines.
This is one of the bunk rooms for the crew.
Chuck  invited us back into the galley.

Chuck is a delightful host and invited us for coffee and cake that he had baked just before we arrived. The immaculate condition of the galley is really impressive! He is on board alone awaiting his crew for the voyage to Bristol Bay Alaska. The boat is so well maintained by Chuck that it gleams!

He is quite the baker and shared his recipes with us. What a wonderful host and delightful person.

THANK YOU CHUCK! for a wonderful experience.

Chuck raised and set the standard for running and keeping a Tender. The fleet would do well to follow his lead.
