Dante and Deb stay with us for an additional 3 days. Our first night was at Taku a resort on Quadra Island in Rebecca Spit.

The sunset was spectacular. The resort is pricey at $1.20 per ft and did not match the glowing reports in Waggoner's cruising guide.

Daniel and Melanie Return to California

Melanie takes the wheel as we round Cape Mudge.

In the distance is a magnificent Canadian schooner displaying The Maple Leaf on her sail.
We pass Mitlenatch Island which translates from native language as: "The island that never gets closer". It is a wildlife refuge in the middle of the Strait of Georgia.

The "Girls" Visit Hollyhock on Cortes Island

Hollyhock is a lovely health resort on Cortes Island.

We enjoyed our visit to the gardens. The hot tubs overlooking Cortes Bay are very inviting.

The gardens at Hollyhock are bursting with color.

Arrived in Campbell River for Repairs July 21st

We passed through Seymour Narrows without incident and docked at Discovery Marina. The wind started to build and that evening it was gusting to 35 knots in the slip. For the next 3 days it blew 25 to 35 knots nonstop. We contacted the new Ocean Pacific Boat Yard for repairs on our Vacu-Flush system. We were fortunate when they sent out "Darcy" formerly of Philbrooks and Vector in Sidney who had worked on our boat in the past.
We started the preparations for Lou's 70th Birthday Party and the arrival of our family on July 27th.

AMAZING HELICOPTER LOGGING

We watched in amazement at a helicopter removing logs and then dumping them in the inlet to be gathered in a log boom. The helicopter pilot intentionally swings the log at the end of the cable to aim it at the spot where he will release it.

THE "JOYS" OF JOHNSTONE STRAIT

Logs, stumps, wind and rain squalls are common when transiting Johnstone Strait not to mention pods of Orcas, tug boats pulling barges and log booms.

AHHH! BACK IN THE UTOPIA OF SOINTULA

It is great to be back in one of our favorite places. We are looking forward to visiting with friends and enjoying the peace and solitude of this magic community. The crabbing is great! What more could one ask for?

IT IS GOOD TO SEE FRIENDS!

Kathleen and Jim meet us at Sointula Harbor.

A FISHERMAN'S JOB IS NEVER DONE!

On the docks in Sointula a fisherman repairs his nets. A once vital fishing port times are lean and many fishermen cannot afford to keep their boats.

THE TIDE IS OUT AND THE CRABS ARE IN!

During the time of the full moon the tides are extreme. In Rough Bay Sointula families put on their boots, grab their buckets and shovels and go crabbing. Even the Black Labs get into the act pointing and barking when they locate a crab.

THE SHRIMP BOAT IS IN!

Just outside the Co-Op Store in the center of Sointula Village the girls from a shrimp boat that arrived at the harbor sell their catch for $10 a bag.

We remove the heads of the shrimp, rinse and package for the freezer. They make delicious hors'douvres when steamed in beer with onion, garlic, black pepper and red pepper flake.

IN SEARCH OF A PICTOGRAPH

We depart "Louie's Cove" as we named it, into the perfect mirror like stillness of the bay in Alison Sound. We are in search of a pictograph. Douglas Cruising Guide described. He failed to give specifics on the locationI perched myself on the bow with binoculars and camera in hand and we turn east on Belize Inlet.
It was a beautiful day about 75 degrees with pristine reflections in the water.
We continued up the inlet for 3 1/2 miles and decided to turn around in defeat. As we returned to the entrance to Alison Sound I spotted the familiar ochre color on the steep walls of the entrance from whence we came.

This pictograph depicts the incident. Notice the square rigger, the smaller vessels with many oars and men in wide brim hats carrying rifles. Dolphins leap from the water.

The inlet was first surveyed in 1865. It is recorded in Canadian History that in 1869 a government warship was dispatched to the area to put down a skirmish between the First Nations People and the whites.

VILLAGE COVE TO ALISON SOUND ON BELIZE INLET

The sun shone a brillant white as we
departed Village Cove and turned due east on Belize Inlet. Water falls of newly melted snow dumped into the inlet.

Layers upon layers of glaciated peaks lay before us on this wonderful day.
Rising 1,000 feet on the port side is "Half Dome of Belize" sparking thoughts of it's creation. We turn up Alison Sound through the narrow gorge into a large bay. Snow capped peaks appear as we search for an achorage.
The wind whips down the steep sides of the bay creating "Wiliwaws".
The wind was blowing from the northwest at about 20 knots. Lou finds an uncharted anchorage to protect us for the night from the wind.

BREAKFAST! THE FRUITS OF OUR LABOR

Fresh Dungeness Crab Omelet

Hot Freshly Baked Croissants

Fresh Ground Coffee

What a great way to wake up in the morning.

LIVING THE "WILD LIFE IN CANADA"

We do not like to cook crab in the boat. We hung the crab we caught in Allison cove off the stern of the boat until we could find a suitable place to cook them
Lou waits for the water to boil.
The Crab is cooking!
We found a little islet near our anchorage free of fire hazards, brought over the cooking pot, propane and embarked on cooking in the wild.
 It worked out great!
