June 14, 2013 - JUNEAU - Mendenhall Glacier

In the morning we visited the Mendenhall Glacier.  It is not far from our boat in Auk Bay. You can hike a 4 mile trail and view the glacier and waterfall close up!

"As I stand before the glacier, I do not want to mourn your past . . . or fear your future.
I want to bask in your present beauty and celebrate your contribution to forming our
 beautiful planet.
I want to "Be here in the present" just for this moment in time!
It is only too soon that reality will set in."     M. Aubert

Purple Lupin grows abundantly along the trails.

Icebergs break off or "Calve" and create an ice field in the lake from the run off of the melting glacier.

Huge chunks of ice float past us.

The Glacier is forever changing and the ice we see at it's edge took 200 years to reach its end.

The icebergs will melt and flow down the Mendenhall River to the ocean.

The ice is so compacted that it turns blue.  This piece is ready to calve.

The run off from the upper part of glacier is voluminous. You can tell by the size of the people in front of it just how  big it is!

I would have loved to see this monster break off into the lake!

I was touched by someones love of Wolves.  This plaque was placed along the trail to the glacier.

Daniel catches me taking advantage of the mist of the waterfall. It is about 78 degrees and we have hiked 4 miles.               It felt AMAZING!
