June 15, 2013 - Our Flight Over the Juneau Ice Fields Aboard A DeHavilland Beaver Floatplane, Built in 1953

When we were in Taku we met a really great couple Barry and Armada from Gorge Harbor, BC aboard S/V Papa Rumba.  We saw them again in Auk Bay and invited them for dinner aboard Seventh Heaven one evening.  Barry suggested we charter a DeHavilland Beaver Float plane and explore glaciers from the air.

It turned out to be one of the most poignant experiences of my life.  I felt that I had entered a timeless world and bore witness to the formation of our planet.  To actually observe the force of ice carving monoliths of rock creating deep canvasses with the scars of centuries of erosion.  The Juneau Ice field is approximately 1,500 sq. miles north to south and 47 miles east to west.
When you stand in front of a tidal glacier such as Mendenhall you see the final stages of its path.  When you see the glaciers from the air you witness the process of glaciation in all of its glory.

Please enjoy this short slide show.
