July 26, 2013 - Tenekee to Sitka with Sandy and Dave

Eliason Harbor, Sitka, AK

We start our first day in Sitka with a visit to "The Fortress of the Bears".
It was like going back to see old friends!  Sandy and Dave enjoyed watching the orphaned bears play and do what bears do when no one is watching.

When no one is looking he sticks out his tongue!

She smiles for the Paparazzi !

He sings a song!

She pretends she is an Alligator!

He shows off his claws!

And she ponders her life atop and old stump!

We then visit the "Alaska Raptor Rescue Center"
There are many wonderful stories of recovery and release of injured Raptors.
The birds injured beyond the possibility of release enjoy life in the beautiful surroundings
of the Raptor Center along the Indian River.  They educate the public in the importance of
the  preservation of these magnificent creatures!
We fell in love with "Tootsie" a Northern Saw-whet Owl.  She was sent
to the Center from Craig, AK with a broken left humerus.  The injury was
pinned but did not heal well enough to allow full extension.  She cannot
fly well enough to survive in the wild so she is deemed not releasable.
She has a special place at the front desk of the center.

Hali a female Bald Eagle was born with a deformed beak
.  She could not survive in the wild.

Volta is the "Ambassador"of the center! In 1992 he was found nearly dead
by the harbor in Sitka after he flew into some power lines.  Part
of his wings had to be amputated.  Volta cannot be released into the wild.
Because of his personality, he has traveled all over the United States. He
even rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange and has been a guest on
prime time talk shows.

We head to Halibut Point State Park which is the
"End of the Road" for the city of Sitka.

We can see thousands of  salmon making their way up the river to spawn.

After dinner we meet friends from Friday Harbor at the "Infamous Pioneer Bar"on old
Katilan Street in Sitka.

On the way to the airport we stopped at our favorite pub and had a shot of Patron as a final fairwell to Sandy.
"Bye Sandy !" We will miss you but we are looking forward to the next adventure!
WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME WE HAD !
