MAY 30 - JUNE 2nd REFUGE COVE TO GORGE HARBOR

As we passed Homfrey Channel on the edge of Desolation Sound we spotted a group of Dahl's Porpoise near Mink Island. We approached Refuge Cove and realized that they had not opened for the season yet. We were the only boat in the entire area. I was reminded of Captain Vancouver's comments in his log when he named this region "Desolation Sound". We spent the night at the dock and in the morning sailed to Gorge Harbor. We passed the familiar pictographs at the narrow entrance and anchored in the west end of the bay. Lou dropped the prawn trap outside the entrance but after two days they remained empty. A weather front from Alaska blew in and we were held up for two days with winds blowing 25 knots. We went ashore for a hike in the forest on Cortez Island.
