GILLEN HARBOR ACROSS HECATE STRAIT TO QUEEN CHARLOTTE CITY JULY 13TH and 14TH

We motored / sailed for 6 hours to Gillen Harbor to prepare for our crossing of the infamous Hecate Strait. We checked our Weather Fax and Sailmail Grib Files broadcasted over our Single Sideband Radio and the Marine Weather forecasts on our VHF radio to confirm our weather conditions. We departed at 5 AM and motored / sailed 108 miles to Queen Charlotte City arriving at 8 PM. We had a good crossing with moderate wind and seas. The swells were "lumpy" rather than rolling because of the contour of the bottom and shallow depths. It causes a "squirrelly" ride.
We anchored in the bay near Queen Charlotte City. We were all exhausted from the long voyage and retired after dinner. The next day we investigated the small village. Daniel and I checked out the local pub called "Howlers". We ran across some of the local charactors. That evening we attended the mandatory orientation to enter the Gwaii Haanas National Park and World Heritage Site.
