Friends from Friday Harbor, John and Dorie joined us in Sitka
! |
Sitka can only accessed by boat or by plane. When the road ends that is all there is!
We depart Eliason Harbor at 5 am to time the Sergius and Peril Strait Rapids. The weather continued to get better as we headed north east away from the Gulf of Alaska. |
We rode the ebb tide through the narrows. You can see by the slant of the buoy we are getting closer to max tide. The entire water way through the center of Baranof Island is approximately 30 miles. So at some point we would experience both the ebb and flood tides. |
Our speed over ground increased to 13.7 knots as we advanced through some of the narrow spots. |
The water swirled and churned into whirlpools making for a bumpy ride at times. |
As you can see, Lou was enjoying the "Sleigh Ride!" |
We arrived at Tenakee about 4 pm. |
As we walked town, we noticed an old phone booth. It has a handmade seat and some one's old push button "Princess Phone"from the Ma Bell days. IT WORKS ! WASTE NOT, WANT NOT ! |
We passed a beautiful old growth Ash tree. |
As we hiked to town we looked back at Seventh Heaven. There are no roads in Tenakee. Just a small pathway where bicycles and ATVs can be used. |
Could not resist a photo of this Raven pair! |
After spending most of the day aboard Seventh Heaven during our 85 nautical miles passage, soaking in the 108 degrees mineral springs felt DIVINE! |
Not much to be "BEWARE" of Tenakee Springs, population 104 residents. But then again, there are always Bears, Moose, Wolves, Mosquitoes, etc. etc. |
