July 13, 2013 Hoonah to Juneau

Dorie and John flew to Glacier Bay from Hoonah and spent the night in the Glacier Bay Lodge. They boarded a Glacier Bay Boat for an 8 hour trip to all of the accessible glaciers.  They saw Moose, a Grizzly Bear,  a lone Wolf, Tufted Puffins and rafts of  Sea Otters.  They flew to Juneau from Gustavus.
In Hoonah some fisherman really take pride in their boats.
As we were heading to Auk Bay we saw the misty breath of a Humback Whale.

As the Humpback dove underwater we noticed the sky turning dark.

The clouds began moving very fast and fingers of rain began to pound the boat.
From both Port and Starboard the clouds circled around us.

Huge volumes of rain poured from the sky.  We could barely see the little red boat crossing our bow.

This short video shows the tail end of the squall!

The Squall passed so quickly that on the Starboard side of Seventh Heaven the sky was becoming clear. On the Port side it was impossible to see through the rain.

By the time it passed Auk Bay with Mendenhall Glacier in the background, the sky was perfectly clear.  This all happened in about 30 minutes.

The now familiar "Cocktails"was receiving finishing touches tied to the breakwater of Auk Bay.

We passed a brilliant field of Fire Weed in front of Mendenahall Glacier.  We picked up John and Dorie at the Juneau Airport arriving on their flight from Glacier Bay / Gustavus in our rental car.
In the morning we have fresh baked croissants and John's home made Apricot Jam.

Nothing like the smell of something baking in the morning.

Dorie and I went exploring to Mendenhall Glacier.
We had to go Juneau to have some Russian Dumplings.  They have become quite famous!

Russian Dumplings Filled with Tender Beef
Drizzled in Butter
Sprinkled with Curry, Spicy Sauce and Fresh Parsley
Served with Russian Rye Bread.
It is all they serve.  What you see is what you get!
We returned to the boat and had some White Spot Prawns for a snack before dinner.

In the morning we drove John and Dorie to the Alaska State Ferry Terminal for their trip back to Sitka.

One final "Good-bye"before they board!
"Bye, we will see you in Friday Harbor!"

Here is the "End of the Road" in Juneau.  The capitol of Alaska is only accessible boat or plane.
