Shawl Bay is another delightful marina in the Broughtons. It is a collection of old float houses. Every morning Lorne, Shawn and their son Robert serve a free Pancake breakfast to all of their guests.
Carol "The Bead Lady" has her shop at Shawl Bay with her lovely handmade jewelry as well as pieces from local artists. One of her trademarks are exquisite hand beaded hummingbirds. It is always a pleasure to visit with her and to see her lovely work!
When you hang the Humming Bird in a window the light shines through the luminescent beads.
I purchased the adorable Octopus bead from Carol and we added four of my "Russian Blue Trade Beads" I have collected along the way. The faceted blue beads were shipped to Alaska and down the coast and into the North American “Northwest”. They appeared in Alaska just prior to the 1870’s. They were popularly traded during the fur trade era. The glass beads are known for their numerous and irregular facets, and blue coloring; transparent and opaque. There are deviations in the number of facets on the face of the bead.
This is one of many interesting buildings at Shawl Bay. It is like a step back in time!
